A blended braking approach

The proposed blended braking concept will create an optimised brake architecture and advanced control system that blends adhesion independent (Eddy Current Brakes and Magnetic Track Brakes) and raising (adaptive Wheel Slide Protection, intelligent sanders) systems to deliver predictable and optimised braking independent of the adhesion level. An optimised and integrated software/hardware approach will ensure the deceleration of the train stays within the required corridor during degraded adhesion conditions whilst optimising deployment costs. This will allow for significant benefits to be achieved by industry, whilst optimising the costs involved.
Benefits could include independence from the Autumn timetable, a reduction in braking-related maintenance costs, and reduction in adhesion related delays and penalties.
