In October 2018, RSSB launched their decarbonisation competition worth a total funding of £1 million. The call for research is aligned with the decarbonisation strategy that RSSB and the Task Force are leading. With the Task Force presenting a final report to ministers.

The six successful projects funded by RSSB, aimed at developing alternative, energy-efficient technologies for high-speed trains and freight trains, and innovative solutions for the provision, storage and distribution infrastructure of energy.

On the 16th July, RSSB hosted a cross-project meeting, consisting of presentations from the six winning projects. Alongside these, five Innovate UK projects funded through their FOAK2 initiative were invited to present. Those in attendance included industry experts and organisations. On the 18th July, RSSB hosted a Hydrogen Roundtable. This was an opportunity to deepen the industry's understanding of the various hydrogen initiatives currently ongoing in rail, learn from what others have achieved around hydrogen strategy and policy development.
