In October 2015, RSSB, in association with RRUKA, launched a £500,000 call for research to develop novel ideas around how to make use of robotic and/or autonomous systems to carry out rolling stock maintenance and inspections in order to help the rail industry reduce time, cost and increase reliability of inspections.

The feasibility studies themselves, and the discussion that has been generated, have contributed to a broader and deeper understanding of the transformational potential of robotics and autonomous systems as a key enabler towards realising the Rail Technical Strategy 2012’s vision of the railway of the future.

Work is now underway to turn this understanding into tangible benefits for the industry and its customers and RSSB has funded further work aimed at developing and implementing these ideas.
